Who is the course suitable for?
The course is aimed at all enthusiastic beginners. No experience is necessary, you will only need to bring with you a thirst to broaden your knowledge and enjoyment of wine in a friendly, fun, structured and relaxed atmosphere.
What can I expect from the course?
Over the six weeks we will help to unearth the mystery surrounding what can be a very large and sometimes daunting world of wine. to help you, this course will teach you all the basics you need to know to make a start: how to taste wine professionally, the differences and characteristicsof the major grape varieties, the main wine producing regions of the world, the principles of matching food and wine, help with understanding labels and buying wine in shops and restaurants, how wine is grown, produced and marketed and more. We will teach you using the systematic approach to wine tasting, illustrating each subject by giving you a minimum of 6 wines per week to taste "blind".
The course is limited to a maximum of 12 students to concentrate on high quality attentive teaching, answering questions as we go, so early booking is strongly advised.
Week 1 - Welcome to Wine world!
In our introductory week we will cover the basic principles to give you a good foundation on which to build over the following sessions. We will look at how wine is made, how to spot faults, a brief history of wine, how to store wine and give you an introduction to the systematic approach to tasting.
Week 2 - The good, the bad and the Burgundy
Chardonnay, the most popular white grape on the planet and arguably one of the most important. Wonderfully versatile in style and rich in a spectrum of flavours making it an essential first stop for any enthusiast of wine. We will explore benchmark styles, the foundations of terroir, different types of oaked and un-oaked wine, and food matching.
Week 3 - All White?
Other bendchmark white wines from around the world with individual styles and personalities of their own, you will be developing your tasting, analytic and food matching skills as you go.
Week 4 - Simply Red!
Following up on your knowledge learned in the major white wines, this week we will explore the essential single variety red wines from around the world, (Syrah, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon etc.), uncovering key styles, production techniques, food matching and ageing potential.
Week 5 - Food!Glorious Food!
Does wine actually go with curry? What types of red wine go with fish? How do you find the perfect red for your roast lamb? This week we'll be helping you uncover some of the commen mysteries and myths surrounding matching food and wine. This is a PRACTICAL week, we will be sampling different food groups with different wines and experimenting together to learn what works, what doesn't work and why!
Week 6 - 'Owt with a BANG (well, more of a pop really!)
We finish off our journey with the big fizz of Champagne and other major sparkling styles of wine from around the world, looking at how they are made, what they have in common whilst at the same time remaining so unique. We end with a look at dessert wines and a review of the course as a whole.
