Wonderful flavors in this smooth Vin de Pays from Domaine Les Aphillanthes. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvdre. Biodynamic.

Domaine Les Aphillanthes - Cotes du Rhone
Travaillan, Southern Rhône
Domaine Les Aphillanthes, in the southern Rhône, is located in the small town of Travaillan, northwest of Gigondas. Until recently Daniel Boulle and his wife Hélène, the proprietors, were happy to sell their produce to the local co-operative but now bottles the wine for the domain. Boulle uses a gravity feed, and ferments in concrete vats and has a philosophy of minimal intervention. The wines are bottled without filtration, which helps to preserve the flavours.
A few years ago the Boulles introduced biodynamic practices to the vineyard after having had some success in treating their son's eczema using natural medical products which they liken to a biodynamic approach. They do not yet, however, have Biodynamic certification from any of the organisations (Ecocert, Demeter or Biodyvin) as they are still in the conversion stage.
Several cuvées of Côtes du Rhônes have received critical acclaim in the international market Parker even says "spectacularly powerful, ...comparable to the finest Gigondas and Chateauneuf du Papes".

An area of world famous vineyards which starts south of Lyon at Ampuis and runs down to the Côtes de Provence. Grape types include Grenache, Syrah, Mourvédre, Cinsault, Marsanne and Roussanne and these produce wines of immense pedigree and quality, including the dark purple Côte Rotie wines and the fruity Viognier.
