Domaine des Escaravailles - Rasteau, Southern Rhone

Tasting at Gilles Ferran's cavé is one of our eagerly anticipated trips each year. High on a hillside overlooking the village of Cairanne, with breathtaking views over the plains of the Southern Rhone valley, the domaine has been in family hands since 1953. Its name comes from a nickname bestowed on the monks who once owned and worked the vineyard who, from far below, resembled scarab beetles (escaravailles) as they worked between the vines.

These wines have been on our list since we first started out and they continue to please us and our customers. With organic production and hand-harvesting of the Grenache, Syrah and Carignan, the resulting wines offer a depth of fruit and quality rarely seen at in this price range.

An area of world famous vineyards which starts south of Lyon at Ampuis and runs down to the Côtes de Provence. Grape types include Grenache, Syrah, Mourvédre, Cinsault, Marsanne and Roussanne and these produce wines of immense pedigree and quality, including the dark purple Côte Rotie wines and the fruity Viognier.

Fortified wine is wine to which a distilled beverage (usually brandy) has been added. Fortified wine is distinguished from spirits made from wine in that spirits are produced by means of distillation, while fortified wine is simply wine that has had a spirit added to it. Many different styles of fortified wine have been developed, including port, sherry, madeira, marsala, and vermouth
Vins doux naturels are lightly fortified wines typically made from white Muscat grapes or red Grenache grapes in the south of France. The production of vins doux naturels was perfected by Arnaud de Villeneuve at the University of Montpellier in the 13th century and they are now quite common in the Languedoc-Roussillon of southwest France.

As the name suggests, Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise, Muscat de Rivesaltes, and Muscat de Frontignan are all made from the white Muscat grape, whilst Banyuls and Maury are made from red Grenache. Regardless of the grape, fermentation is stopped by the addition of up to 10% of a 190 proof (95%) grape spirit. The Muscats are made in a somewhat oxidised style, the Grenaches less so.
