Domaine Auvigue - Macon, Burgundy

Brothers Jean-Pierre and Michel Auvigue are tucked away on the western side of Macon, the bustling industrial centre of the region. The attractive and neat collection of family house, offices and winery nestle down a side track off the main road – a quiet retreat from where this very professional organization export throughout the wine-consuming world .

The domaine produces an amazing range of cuvées, which made it a daunting tasting after a long day spent traveling and wine tasting throughout the region. But the classical white Burgundy, with its depth of flavours, purity of fruit and added complexity, stood head and shoulders above every other domain's wine we'd tasted that day.

The world famous and ancient Burgundy vineyards cover more than 31,500 square km and stretch like a thin finger for 110 km from Chablis in the north, through the Côte de Nuits to the Côte de Chalonnaise, the Mâconnais and Beaujolais, just north of Lyon. The climate is ideal and the soil rich and fertile, the wines strong, well-structured, balanced and very aromatic. The result is 30,000 growers and over 700 different Appellation Contrôlées. The region may be fragmented but with the emergence of some young and dedicated growers and some superb recent vintages, quality is at an all time high.

From north to south, the terroir (soil type, climate and wine-growing tradition) of Saint-Véran borders directly on that of its neighbour, the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation, and together they share soils that are a mixture of chalk and clay.

It is a pale golden colour when young, taking on a rich amber hue over time and often improving with age. Wine connaisseurs appreciated Saint-Veran's qualities before the appellation was officially recognized. With its complex, ample and elegant bouquet, this typical Burgundy wine offers round, powerful flavours on the palate. Depending on the year and the batch, one can detect fruity notes of white peach, apple or pear, or floral notes of lime-blossom or acacia that give way, over time, to notes of hazelnut or almond, offset by delicate touches of honey, vanilla and flint.

It can for example be matched with chicken in a cream sauce, veal sweetbreads or fish. Saint-Véran should be served at around 11°C and is best opened a few minutes before being served, allowing time for the full richness of its aroma to be released.
