Domaine de Gabelas - St Chinian, Languedoc
Located in the small hamlet of Cruzy, due West of Beziers, this domaine have proved immensely successful for us. Its wines express the smells and tastes of the Languedoc and have a delightful intensity of fruit, balanced with a lightness of touch and mouth feel, which makes them perfect to drink on their own or with a vast variety of dishes. Fig and liquorice abounds.
Considering Pierrette Cravero is the sole winemaker (her husband is the local vet), this domaine well out-performs itself in terms of size and out-put. She deserves recognition for her dedication and unstinting ability to manage and produce wines that portray St Chinian in an ever-more progressive focus. Her wines find their way ever increasingly to my table.
Languedoc-Roussillon stretches along the Mediterranean between the west of the Rhône and Camargue to the Pyrénées mountains, and is one of the largest expanses of vine growing in the world. The climate is perfect and the history of wine making is long, but dramatic changes in technique over the last few years have reduced volume and, in so doing, improved the quality of the wine. The region produces mainly reds which have now lost their vin ordinaire label.
