Domaine Alex Gambal - Beaune, Burgundy
Very few people are so passionate about Burgundy and its wine that they move continents to start their own wine business. But for Alex Gambal it was worth it. Nearly fifteen years on, the Gambal Area has become firmly established within the traditional French wine establishment as a rising star.
Alex Gambal make all his wines in an artisanal manner - in small batches by hand. He bottles by gravity Fining or without filtering his reds and only lightly Fining the whites. The result is full in body, flavor and style, and the extraction of fruit and time spent in barrel gives a voluptuous style that is balanced with a finesse and elegance second to none.
Our only complaint about these wonderful wines is that only small quantities are made each year, Which causes problems when we look to replenish our stocks in the latter part of the year.
The world famous and ancient Burgundy vineyards cover more than 31,500 square km and stretch like a thin finger for 110 km from Chablis in the north, through the Côte de Nuits to the Côte de Chalonnaise, the Mâconnais and Beaujolais, just north of Lyon. The climate is ideal and the soil rich and fertile, the wines strong, well-structured, balanced and very aromatic. The result is 30,000 growers and over 700 different Appellation Contrôlées. The region may be fragmented but with the emergence of some young and dedicated growers and some superb recent vintages, quality is at an all time high.
Saint-Aubin wine is produced in the commune of Saint-Aubin in Côte de Beaune of Burgundy. Rather than being situated on the main Côte d'Or escarpment, as most of the other Côte de Beaune wine villages, the vineyards of Saint-Aubin are mainly located in a side valley to the west of Chassagne-Montrachet. The Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) Saint-Aubin may be used for white and red wine with respectively Chardonnay and Pinot Noir as the main grape variety. The production consists of around 75% white wine, and 25% red wine. There are no Grand Cru vineyards within the Saint-Aubin AOC.
The are 20 climats in Saint-Aubin classified as Premier Cru vineyards. One group of vineyards in the eastern part of the commune is continuous with Premier Cru vineyards of Chassagne-Montrachet, and continue up a south-facing slope situated a little to the west of the Montrachet vineyard. Another group is situated on an east-facing slope in the side valley, forming a band immediately above the village of Saint-Aubin itself. The village of Gamay is situated between these two groups of vineyards.
