Modern style Rioja with fresh fruit to the fore - purity and lightness of touch is the key with a good depth of fruit.
An excellent Rioja Crianza made from carefully selected Tempranillo 80%, Garnacha 10%, Mazuelo 5% and Graciano 5%. Aged 14 months in American and French oak barrels and 12 months in bottle before its release.
Dark black cherry colour. Pungent, berry nose with hints of spices and oak. On the palate, the wine is full flavoured but elegant with dominant fruits of wild red, black and blue berries combined with balsamic, cedar wood and well polished soft tannins.
Medievo - Rioja, Spain
Medievo produce a modern style of Rioja that is fruit-laden with depth and concentration of flavour, focusing on the indigenous grape varieties, yet using all the benefits of modern facilities and techniques.
Established in 2001 and situated about 50km from Logrono, there is about 220 hectares of vineyard under cultivation, including Tempranillo, Grenacha, Mazuelo and Graciano grape varieties. Their vineyards extend across the highest areas of Aldeanueva on the fringes of Mount Yerga, approximately 600 meters above sea level. This was our first venture into Spain and the result is wines that are flavour-packed with up-front fruit, depth and substance - very pleasing, elegant wines.
Rioja is a wine, with Denominación de Origen Calificada (D.O.C. Qualified designation of origin) named after La Rioja, in Spain.
Rioja is further subdivided into three zones:Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa. Many wines have traditionally blended fruit from all three regions though there is a slow growth in single zone wines.
Rioja red wines are classified into four categories. The first, simply labeled "Rioja," is the youngest, spending less than a year in an oak aging barrel.
"crianza" is wine aged for at least two years, at least one of which was in oak.
"Rioja Reserva" is aged for at least three years, of which at least one year is in oak.
"Rioja Gran Reserva" wines have been aged at least two years in oak and three years in bottle.
Reserva and Gran Reserva wines are not necessarily produced each year. Also produced are wines in a semi-crianza style, those that have had a couple of months oak influence but not enough to be called a full crianza. The designation of crianza, Reserva etc might not always appear on the front label but may appear on a neck or back label in the form of a stamp designation known as Consejo
