+65 years old vines that are not the uniform producing cloned variety but are twisted, beautiful and produce small tiny berries. There are also a few Muscat or Muscat Chardonnay plants intermingled that give the wine its exotic nose.
Almost confectionary in its nose of marzipan, vanilla, and nut brittle, the Gambal 2007 Meursault Clos du Cromin then comes to the palate with toasted nut and citrus that reflect much less sense of sweetness than the nose leads one to expect. This offers an excellent balance between richness and juicy primary fruit brightness.
Domaine Alex Gambal - Beaune, Burgundy
Very few people are so passionate about Burgundy and its wine that they move continents to start their own wine business. But for Alex Gambal it was worth it. Nearly fifteen years on, the Gambal Area has become firmly established within the traditional French wine establishment as a rising star.
Alex Gambal make all his wines in an artisanal manner - in small batches by hand. He bottles by gravity Fining or without filtering his reds and only lightly Fining the whites. The result is full in body, flavor and style, and the extraction of fruit and time spent in barrel gives a voluptuous style that is balanced with a finesse and elegance second to none.
The world famous and ancient Burgundy vineyards cover more than 31,500 square km and stretch like a thin finger for 110 km from Chablis in the north, through the Côte de Nuits to the Côte de Chalonnaise, the Mâconnais and Beaujolais, just north of Lyon. The climate is ideal and the soil rich and fertile, the wines strong, well-structured, balanced and very aromatic. The result is 30,000 growers and over 700 different Appellation Contrôlées. The region may be fragmented but with the emergence of some young and dedicated growers and some superb recent vintages, quality is at an all time high.
Meursault is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) in the Côte de Beaune subregion of the Burgundy wine region. It lies along the foot of the Cote-d'Or escarpment, around Beaune and with the broad Saône valley plain to its east. Meursault produces mainly white wines from Chardonnay grapes, primarily in a style with a clear oak influence, which have led to descriptions such as "buttery" to be applied to powerful examples of Meursault wines. Within the Meursault AOC there are some Premier Cru vineyards, but no Grand Cru. This has however not stopped the wines from Meursault from competing with the white burgundies from the villages Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet, where several Grands Crus are situated.
