100% Mourvedre. Remarkable wine, sleek and superb depth. Already very beautiful, but with a big potential - Olives and spices, concentrated fruit with prunes and olives on the elegant finish.
Chateau de Valflaunes - Pic St Loup, Languedoc
Decanter magazine described Fabian Reboul as 'one of a new generation of stars in Pic St Loup', an area of Languedoc that is blessed with a wild beauty that carries through to its wines. Reboul accumulated his wine-making experience through his extensive travels through Burgundy, Oregon and New Zealand, before returning to his native village to make his first wine in 1998.
We had to wait for twelve months to get our hands on this tranche of wines and which is made in such small quantities that the majority is snapped up in the home market well before it is even in barrel. But it was certainly worth waiting for! (A word of advice for anyone visiting the domaine - beware the neighbour's dogs!)
Languedoc-Roussillon stretches along the Mediterranean between the west of the Rhône and Camargue to the Pyrénées mountains, and is one of the largest expanses of vine growing in the world. The climate is perfect and the history of wine making is long, but dramatic changes in technique over the last few years have reduced volume and, in so doing, improved the quality of the wine. The region produces mainly reds which have now lost their vin ordinaire label.
The five best known appellations in the Languedoc include Coteaux du Languedoc, Corbières AOC, Faugères, Minervois AOC, and Saint-Chinian AOCs. The vast majority of Languedoc wines are produced by wine cooperatives which number more than 500. However, the appellation system in the region is undergoing considerable changes with both new appellations being created and existing ones changing. One recent change is that the Coteaux du Languedoc has changed name to Languedoc and been extended to include also the Roussillon.
Within the larger Coteaux du Languedoc appellations are several sub-districts with distinct wine styles of their own. Some of these sub-districts have pending AOC applications to become appellations in their own right and some have been granted sub-appellations to the umbrella appellation Coteaux du Languedoc. These include the, Picpoul de Pinet, Terrasses du Larzac and Pic St.-Loup.
