Domaine Clos Thou - Jurancon, Languedoc
Set in the lush green rolling foothills of the Pyrenees, just to the west of Pau, Jurançon is one of the most beautiful viticultural areas of France. It is always a pleasure to visit this beautiful old town with its historic Chateau overlooking the mountains which stretch into the distance – even when it is to see your rugby team succumb to the vagaries of a French provincial rugby club.
Domaine Clos Thou produces the most delightful styles of Jurançon, from the clean, racy acidity of the Sec with its lively rich palate of orange marmalade and acacia flower, to the ultra rich but refreshingly clean ‘Cuvee Julie’ with its layers of honeyed ripeness, luxurious white fruit and lightness of taste on an evolving palate.
Languedoc-Roussillon stretches along the Mediterranean between the west of the Rhône and Camargue to the Pyrénées mountains, and is one of the largest expanses of vine growing in the world. The climate is perfect and the history of wine making is long, but dramatic changes in technique over the last few years have reduced volume and, in so doing, improved the quality of the wine. The region produces mainly reds which have now lost their vin ordinaire label.
Jurançon is a wine region in South West France in the foothills of the Pyrenees, around the commune of Jurançon. It produces a dry white wine and a more sought after sweet white wine. The grape varieties used are Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng and Courbu. The sweet wines develop aromas of tropical fruit such as pineapple and mango. The vines are grown on steep mountain slopes and for the sweet wines the grapes are often hand selected well into October and November to ensure the best noble rot characteristics - although Tim Wildman MW states that noble rot is not the origin of sweetness in these wines.
