Domaine de Boissan - Gigondas
Gigondas, Southern Rhône
Christian Bonfils domaine and family home is actually located in the sleepy little village of Sablet – not a village that is over endowed with life. A typical French bar with the necessary dog and full of Galois-smoking locals playing an incomprehensible game of cards is all that passes for entertainment. However the domaine has vineyard holdings that date back to 1898 throughout the areas of Sablet, Gigondas and Vacqueyras. It has extended its winemaking and aging cellars throughout this time, with the addition of a barrel cellar in 1997.
As with the majority of wine- making within the Southern Rhone, the main grape used here is the Grenache, interlinked with Syrah and Mourvèdre, resulting in wines that are bursting with vitality and depth of fruit-ripe plum, chocolate and spice with hints of black pepper and thyme.
The Southern Rhône wines, my first introduction into drinking wine, will always hold a special place in my heart with the warmth, depth of flavours and generosity that they offer.
An area of world famous vineyards which starts south of Lyon at Ampuis and runs down to the Côtes de Provence. Grape types include Grenache, Syrah, Mourvédre, Cinsault, Marsanne and Roussanne and these produce wines of immense pedigree and quality, including the dark purple Côte Rotie wines and the fruity Viognier.
